A Message from God

I’ve never heard God audibly speak, but two years ago, I did receive a “Message from God” in a very unlikely way.

I had just moved my family to a new city and was serving as a pastor in a new church. The transitions and pressures of life and ministry with a young family were beginning to feel overwhelming. I felt exhausted, misunderstood, frustrated, discouraged and near the end of my rope. I wanted to quit. For the first time in my adult life, I wanted to do anything but ministry!

I was sharing all of this with my amazing wife one night and finally in frustration, I stood up from the couch and began to stomp around the living room like a toddler and said, “God, it feels like you are being completely quiet right now! Where are you? I could really use a message from you. Just tell me what I’m supposed to do here!”

I plopped back on the couch in frustration and threw my feet up on the coffee table. My wife said, “You’ve got something stuck on your foot.”

I looked down and there was a sticker on my heel. It must have been left on the floor by one of my kids. As I peeled it off to look at it, I had to catch my breath because I was overwhelmed by what it said. I was (and still am) convinced that sticker on my foot was as clear a Message from God as I have ever received. It simply said, “KEEP GOING!”

That marked a turning point in my attitude and my perspective. I wrote the date “6-30-10” on that sticker and placed it on the front page of my Bible as a constant reminder to Keep Going. God gave me the strength to press through that difficult season, and very quickly, almost every area of life and ministry began to improve.

We’ve all had moments where we’ve felt like giving up and moments where we’ve wondered where God is in all of it. I pray that you are reminded that God is with you, He is for you, He will carry you through the struggle, He will bring Purpose from your Pain and He will reward your Faithfulness. Just Don’t Give Up. Keep Going until you reach the Finish Line!

“…And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2

Wow ! The Lord has a sense of Humor ! We forget sometimes (Especially me) that He is like an Air Traffic Controller. He can see the whole picture when we can only see the fog and instruments in front of us. I have had to learn to Trust my instruments in front of me when i am blinded by circumstances. What are my instruments you might ask ? My instruments are the many Living scriptures in the Word of God, the one and only TRUE Living God and the Holyspirit is like my Air Traffic Controller instructing me on where to go and when because He can see the whole picture and I can’t. Thanyou so Much for Sharing that ! We all need to remember to pray for our Ministers, they not only have to deal with their personal issues but everyone elses to sometimes. May God Continue To Bless You !

  2. I let you know on Twitter that this post said ALOT to me (also the post you re-posted on Twitter the other day ‘A Message for Those Struggling to Find Work’)
The Struggling to Find Work post – particularly about the time being a gift. God has certainly used my time without work to work deeply, but when I have tried to share with others, it comes out of my mouth sounding more like an indulgence. Time being a gift is definitely a much better starting point.
Today’s post 16 July. I loved the story of the sticker & how God uses sometimes such simple things to speak to us & exciting when you know for sure He is speaking directly. The keeping going for me relates directly to unemployment & I had been having a ‘toddler tantrum’ just today over another job I did not get. At the end of the post the words from Hebrews 12:1-2 jumped out particularly as these are the words written in the front of my childhood bible by the person who gave it to me (now nearly 50 years old!)
So thank you for sharing from your heart and through that thank you too for our God who uses what He will to speak directly into all our hearts.
PS I have made my own keep going sticker with today’s date on it!

Jo, Thank you for sharing this! Your words are powerful. I’m thankful to know that the blog is encouraging you and God is carrying you through right now. It’s beautiful that His message of “Keep Going” will now be a reminder to you like it was to me. I’m praying for you! God bless.

Thank you so much for sharing this encouraging post.

These kinds of messages are so valuable in our lives and, one day, a precious legacy we can leave behind for our children.

  4. God certainly has a sense of humor. Sometimes two words can change a life . . . “I do” “I Will” and now “Keep Going.” Love how He uses the simpliest of simple to get our attention. Glad you kept going.
